Credit cards that offered travel rewards have always been popular among the consumers. With an increasing number of people planning to take a vacation in the near future, the demand for these credit cards has seen an upward trend.

The increasing cost of air fares has coerced customers into taking the right measures to curb the increasing cost of travel. One of the best ways to keep the expenditure low is by opting for the right travel rewards credit cards that offer optimal benefits on every purchase. Banks are working round the clock to come up with credit cards that meet this requirement. Despite the various cards, there are a few travel rewards cards that are worth signing up for.

The Capital One Rewards Venture credit card offers $2 for every hundred dollars that the customers spend on the card. In contrast, CitiGroup Inc offers only $1.04 on its AAdvantage World MasterCard or Citi Platinum Select credit card for every $100 spent.

When you use the Starwood Preferred Guest credit card that is issued by American Express when you stay in certain hotels around the country, you can get up to $2.50 when you spend $100 on the card. This is pretty high compared to the 82 cents offered on the United Mileage Plus Explorer Card for every $100 spent.

One of the most recently conducted surveys in this field has revealed that there are 14 major credit cards that offer travel rewards. Based on the survey results, the top three credit cards in the travel rewards category are the American Express’ Starwood Preferred Guest card, Capital One Venture Rewards card and the United MileagePlus Explorer card. At the bottom of this list we have the Miles credit card from Discover, Chase Sapphire from JP Morgan Chase and AAdvantage World MasterCard and Citi Platinum Select credit card.

The survey also revealed the there are other factors other than the redemption value that customers consider when applying for travel rewards credit cards. The interest rates on credit cards that offer hotel and airlines rewards are higher than the other credit cards. Customers can use the American Express Delta Skymiles credit card or the Hilton Honors Visa Signature Card from CitiGroup Inc since they offer good rewards, but not clearing off the balances in full each month entails that you will end up paying more in the form of interest as compared to the value of rewards.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau proposed in December that a publically-accessible online database be created to house all consumer complaints filed regarding their credit cards. The motivation behind this being that such a database would enable consumers to make more empowered decisions when selecting which card to carry while simultaneously marking the agency as a herald of governmental transparency. Currently, there are two federal agencies operating public complaint databases online, The Consumer Product Safety Commission and The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If implemented, the proposed CFPB credit card complaint database would be the third model for how other federal agencies might go about strengthening their transparency while empowering consumers.

The creation of the CFPB was part of 2010’s congressionally-mandated Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. The CPFB has been granted authority to handle all credit card complaints made by consumers. It began accepting such complaints in July 2011 and in just over three months, the bureau fielded over 5,000 grievances both directly from consumers and rerouted via other regulatory agencies. The anticipated amount of consumer interest in the complaints being made by peers is paramount in the reasoning behind CFPB’s desire to establish the public database.

Groups dedicated to consumer advocacy are strongly in support for consumer credit card complaints to be accessible to the general public. Eleven members of Congress sent the CFPB a letter of support for the database in August 2011. Contained within was the statement that, “we believe that public complaint information will help other consumers make better financial decisions up front,” according to online news source OMB Watch.

However, there are opponents to the database. Credit card issuers, for one, are staunchly against the proposal. Last year the National Association of Federal Credit Unions made the statement that “consumer complaints should not be publicly disclosed in any way, shape or form,” OMB Watch reported.

Recently the powerful American Bankers Association submitted a letter to the CFPB containing their comments regarding the proposed publicly accessible complaint database. In the letter, the ABA cited many concerns, one of which was the bureau’s expansive role. However, the primary concern was that by publicizing consumer complaint data the CFPB would be exposing the public to information that is both unreliable and not an accurate representation of the whole.

The letter explained that the data’s “limitations and shortcomings” was “likely to mislead rather than enlighten consumers and policy makers,” according to online news source creditnewsline.com

The financial industry has a considerable amount of political influence which may ultimately prove effective in their blocking the database proposal.

This holiday season – especially on Cyber Monday, traditionally the biggest online shopping day of the year – it’s just as important to be safe about sharing your credit card information as it is to find the prefect gift. Here’s how to protect your credit card information.

DO Look for https//: and security seals on any web site you shop on. Never enter your credit card information on a site that does not have a SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Certificate. This is an established way for online merchants to encrypt the data that gets sent on their web sites and ensure that your credit details don’t travel through the internet without getting coded. Many companies also display security seals or green bars across the top to show that they are encrypting your personal information.

DO Check the BBB reputation of any online merchant you have never seen before. The Better Business Bureau maintains a list of companies that have not complied with basic customer service guidelines. It is important to research the reputation of any company that you find on the web. In particular if you are shopping for something from an overseas company. Many US Federal Trade laws will not protect all purchases you make overseas and it will be more difficult for American authorities and American credit card companies to follow up on complains with companies overseas.

DON’T Give out your credit card information over email or store it on an unsecure thumb drive or document on your computer or smartphone. It is much easier for a hacker to steal your credit card information if it is in an email or in a word document. Unless you encrypt an email it is easy for it to be intercepted and read. Never email your credit information and be wary if you receive a receipt or confirmation from a merchant with your full credit card details.

DON’T Store credit card number on any autocomplete forms in your web browser While it may seem like a short cut to store your credit card information in a autocomplete program, this is another place that identity thief’s can attack for your personal financial information. Always re-enter your credit card info new and never save the number in your web browser.

DO Get a free credit check after you have done a lot of online shopping Consumer credit companies offer once a year credit checks to consumers. If you plan on doing a lot of online shopping on Cyber Monday it is a good idea to follow up with a free credit check to make sure that there are no surprises. The earlier you catch a credit card thief the sooner you can cancel your card by informing your credit card company.

DO Save your online shopping receipts and check for any errors in your credit card statement.

DON’T Forget that your credit card carries protections on your purchase. Check with your credit card company policy to learn your right when it comes to full refunds on returned or damaged goods.

DON’T forward any receipts or other sensitive data via email to friends and loved ones. If you must forward, always remove any potentially sensitive financial information. Emails can easily be intercepted by hackers and other malicious online predators.

The economy is trying to get better, but we all can still feel the pinch in our pockets. Just in time for the holiday season, Wal-Mart, Sears, Kmart, Marshall’s, Best Buy, Toys ‘R’ Us, ELayaway, and TJ Maxx are offering an old option – layaway.

Layaway is not a credit builder — although it doesn’t hurt or help your credit score. If it will save you the headache of getting denied at the register, try using layaway, rather than opening up a new credit card to pay for your items.

Wal-Mart is the newest company to hop on the bandwagon — allowing consumers to put electronics and toys on layaway. Layaway has been missing from the retail world vocabulary for five years.

According to Roman Shteyn, CEO of Credit-Land.com, layaway during the holiday season is a perfect solution to our current economic crisis. “Consumers are low on money, and Wal-Mart can see that as more than half of its consumers are paying cash acquired from living paycheck to paycheck, rather than putting expenses on their credit card,” he said.

“Layaway is a good for Wal-Mart too because layaway will draw consumers in and facilitate the purchasing process.”

In the 80s and 90s, layaway was at its peak, but the landscape changed when credit cards came on the scene. After credit cards came on the market, consumers forwent the layaway route and just put their costly expenses on their credit card.

With layaway consumers usually put anywhere from 10 to 20 percent of the items cost down initially. Then the consumer must sign up for a payment schedule which usually lasts anywhere from 30 to 90 days. There is also a one-time free that ranges from $5 to $10, which is the charge required for moving the item out of the store. If for any reason you have to cancel payment, you are subject to a $10 fee.

There isn’t a huge downside if you skimp out on payment, you just lose the item. But it’s a better price to pay than overdraft fees and extra charges that your bank may charge if you use debit or credit.

Layaway is a great option for a consumer who is running very close to their credit limit, is strapped for cash, or presently can’t afford an item. If you fall into either of those categories don’t be ashamed to finance an item through layaway.

Business credit cards are now gaining a stronger market presence than ever before. Today, these cards not just help in keeping personal finances away from the business ones; they also are proving to be even more rewarding to entrepreneurs.

Competition has increased not just in the personal credit card section. Customers are being enticed with better rewards and perks in the business card segment as well. One of the cards that have upped the rewards is the Business Gold Rewards card from American Express. This charge card that is due to hit the market on Monday will waive off the annual fee of $175 for the first 12 months. Customers can avail 3 points on each airfare purchase they make using this card.

The Business No Hassle Cash Premier card(OFFER EXPIRED) from Capital One is another business card that is making waves in the market. This card offers 2 percent cash back on any purchase made using this card. The $59 annual fee is waived off for the first 12 months and the interest rate is variable at 13.9%. The bank does not limit the amount of rewards you can claim each year. However, if you want to claim cash back more than once a year, it is imperative to decide on a proper redemption schedule. Another business card by the same lender, Clear Interest Business Checking, which was launched in July this year also has perks that many are unaware of. The interest rate on this card varies based on the location of the business.

One of the most recent surveys released by the Federal Reserve clearly shows a 17% drop in the number of cards issued by lenders through alumni associations and colleges. Consumer advocates are quick to attribute this downfall to the implementation of the CARD Act that prevented credit card lenders from offering freebies and rewards to students to get them to apply for their credit cards. According to the provisions of this act, students below the age of 21 compulsorily will need a co-signer of show sufficient proof of income to avail a credit card.

The survey by the Federal Reserve also reveals that there was a 4% drop in the number of marketing agreements signed between credit card lenders and universities, alumni associations and colleges as compared to 2009. There was a decline of 340,409 in the credit cards issued to students in 2010 as compared to over 2 million credit cards issued in 2009.

The amount that alumni associations and colleges received as a part of the marketing agreements that stood at $84.5 million in the year 2009 fell to $73.3 million in 2010, which is clear 13% drop since the year before.

Some of the colleges and universities where the college affinity cards are the most popular are the University of Michigan, University of California, Penn State and University of Texas. The Penn State Alumni Association that has 70,060 alumni accounts made $4.29 million in 2010 from the marketing agreement it signed with the FIA Card Services.

With the recession quickly becoming a thing of the past, many credit card lenders are willing to take risks and offer credit cards to anyone interested. This is one of the reasons that there is no dearth for good credit card offers in the industry today. However, with the CARD act restricting revenue on consumer cards for the lenders, they are coming up with lucrative offers on the business credit cards. This is because these cards do not fall under the purview of the CARD Act and hence are void of all protections extended to consumer cards.

Most the business card holders today face the danger of intermittent increase in rate of interest and other fees and charges on the card. It is also not mandatory for banks to give business card holders an advance notice about the impending change of interest, thereby increasing the risk of high debts.

Almost all major credit card lenders in the country are now aggressively marketing the business credit cards to customers. Most of them are even offering customers this card even if they do not run any business because of the revenue these cards generate for them. Customers just sign up for these cards without reading the fine print assuming these cards carry the same protections are their personal cards. It is only when they start amassing large dues that they begin to realize their folly.

It is imperative to remember that professional cards are not covered under the CARD Act and hence have to be given a great amount of thought.

This is the right time to apply for your rewards credit cards. With the competition heating up in the industry, credit card lenders are pushing themselves to extremes to ensure they get a large share of consumers in the market. This has led to them unveiling some fabulous offers that are worth a steal. It is time you learnt to use reward cards wisely to make the most of it and get your card to work the best in your favor.

Cash back rewards seem to be the flavor of the season with many credit card lenders rolling out these rewards to consumers. Consumers, too, are waiting in eager anticipation for these rewards which give them better value for money each time they shop. A number of credit cards offer consumers up to five percent cash back each time they use their card to shop at the favorite store.

Lenders are also encouraging consumers to use their credit cards for paying up their taxes and offering rewards for doing so. Paying for gift cards and retirement plans using this card will also entail you to lucrative deals. Loyal customers stand to gain the most since banks are willing to go overboard and reward their loyalty. Though cash back rewards credit cards are the most preferred, customers can also choose the gift card offers and gas station rewards which work well since they help you save money while still spending on your credit cards.

A lot of people seem to be facing a dilemma these days in deciding if credit union credit cards are better than the ones that are offered by banks. Compounding this dilemma is the fact that banks are coming up with some unparalleled attractive offers that are hard to match. Despite this, there are a lot more advantages for consumers who opt for credit cards issued by credit unions.

The interest rates on the credit cards that are given out by credit unions is most often than not lesser than the national average interest rate. Though the rate of interest is dependent on your credit history and credit score, you can be sure it is definitely lesser than what banks offer for the same score.

Though a number of banks have rolled out balance transfer credit cards in the recent past which offer longer duration for the interest free period, there are fees associated for getting the balance transfer. In case of credit union cards, these fees are absent, thereby allowing consumers to save more money.

Credit unions credit cards also have an upper hand over the ones issued by the bank because getting them is relatively easier. Most of the times, credit unions take into consideration the repayment ability of the individual, in addition to their credit history before granting approval. Finally, if you are looking for a lender who has the patience to listen to your financial woes and help restructure a repayment plan accordingly, there can be no alternative to the cards from credit unions.

One of the major credit card lenders in the United States, Bank of America has revealed its plans of levying penalty rates on credit cards from the month of June, 2011. Bank of America credit card holders who miss making their payment on time are the ones to face the brunt.

On Tuesday, speaking on behalf of the company, their spokesperson confirmed that the bank planned to levy penalty as high as 29.99% on credit card accounts for which payments have not been made on time. However, unlike most of the other lenders in the industry today, the bank will charge penalty only on purchases made after the rate change comes into effect. Also, in accordance with the rules of the CARD Act, the bank will notify all its customers at least 45 days in advance before the penalty rate is levied on their account. In line with this, all customers who are due for a penalty rate will be notified of the impending changes this month. No penalty rate has been levied by the bank on any of its account right from 2009 when the Congress brought about a few changes.

According to the legislation of the CARD Act, banks cannot unnecessarily increase the interest rates on credit cards. If there is a need to increase the interest rates, banks have to intimate their customers at least 45 days in advance and also give them an option of rejecting the interest hike and closing their credit card.
