Credit Card Offers for Students: Things to Keep in Mind

Being a college student is great. You get to experience a whole new world of excitement and meet a lot of great people in the process. Once you've graduated you have a diploma and a bunch of experience you can take with you into the world to start the rest of your life.

Another thing you're likely to end with is a lot of debt. Due to the pressure that our society places on post secondary education many kids end up going to college and due to the difficulty of combining school and a job, many students end up taking out loans to complete their college education, thereby ending up with a large pile of debt at the end.

While most student debt is due to these loans, another type of debt that many students have but few comment on or keep track of is credit card debt. Student credit card deals are pushed as aggressively as anything else by the companies, because they know that students are inexperienced and they proceed to prey on that inexperience. Credit card deals for college students are made every day and virtually every campus has company representatives pushing credit card deals onto students.

Putting a credit card into the hands of an inexperienced spender like a student, regardless of whether they're good credit card deals or even the best credit card deals, is a risky proposition at best and could end up being downright disastrous at worst. The companies as a rule don't really care; they're interested in getting students to spend and then charging them interest rates, thereby trapping the student financially. Students are very computer savvy nowadays and are even pestered online with pop-ups advertising the best credit card online deals. There is no escape from the ruthless credit card companies anywhere.

While that all sounds pretty grim, it's not all gloom and doom. A student that finds a great credit card deal and is able to be disciplined about it will find that credit cards for students can actually be very useful.

Credit cards are the most convenient payment tool currently in existence and a student credit card is no different. Carrying money (especially in urban areas at late hours) can be very risky and if you get mugged, you lose everything. However, a student credit card can go with you, is accepted almost everywhere money is nowadays and if you lose it a quick call to the company will ensure that nobody can hurt you financially with it.

Another great advantage about credit cards is their incentives. Top credit card deals will usually include an incentive of some kind and student credit card deals will add onto that incentive. For example, Visa offers a card that has a 3% GM rewards plan, where 3% of the dollar amount of your purchases is credited to you and can be used towards the purchase of a new or used General Motors vehicle. The student version of this card offers an additional flat rate that is added to your credit upon graduation, a great example of a contender for best student credit card.

New credit card deals are constantly becoming available to students and there are some great credit card deals out there. It's not wrong to have a credit card, but it is very important to be aware of some of the risks of students having credit cards, especially the ones that were highlighted at the start of this article. With many credit card deals for college students around it's easy to find one that offers you convenience and great value and if you stick to a few ground rules, your college student credit card experience can be positive and rewarding.

Firstly, keep in mind that credit cards for students are like any other credit cards. Some of them come with fees and some of them can have very high interest rates. Definitely put as many of your regular purchases on credit card as you can (provided you actually have the money to pay the bill when it comes). This not only allows you to gain full advantage of any rewards program, but it also starts building your credit history. A credit history factors into future decisions by money lenders (such as financing a car or starting a mortgage) so having a good credit history right out of college is a great way to start your life.

Putting things like tuition and textbooks on a credit card is perfectly fine; the problem comes when students start making impulse buys. College students are in greater danger of this than wage earners, both because of their relative inexperience in money handling as well as their proximity to more money dumps (i.e. nightclubs, bars, restaurants, movie theatres and the list goes on and on). A better way to go about things is to only use your credit card for tuition and textbooks and save the rest of the credit limit for emergencies.

Finally, even the best student credit card offers come with an interest rate. Remember that most students have no established credit and may not be used to paying a regular bill. If this is you, make extremely sure that you pay your bills on time and at least make the minimum payment required. This not only keeps your interest charges low, but also serves to increase your credit as you show your ability to make regular payments. If you forget this step, your credit might suffer a hit that could take you years to recover from.

Remember that there's no free money involved with credit cards, just a more convenient (and easy) way to spend money. This in itself can be the shovel that students use to dig their financial hole, but with a small amount of discipline and knowledge of how credit cards work, your student credit card experience can be positive rather than negative.

I seriously think that going through credit problems during college time is a good thing. I happened to me and taught me to avoid the mistakes in the future. It's a part of growing up.

Personally I will never give a credit card to a student. Most of them are careless and credit cards will bring them nothing but problems and debts.
