Divorce and Credit

Married life has a lot of advantages. When you live together with your spouse, you share happy moments and trials of life, you always have a back-up, you have double income, you achieve your common goals together. But once you get divorced, you can face a great deal of problems, not only emotional, but financial ones.

Of course, there are couples where both - husband and wife - can afford living a financially independent life on their own after a divorce. In case both have steady well-paid jobs. But what if you have been a stay-at-home mother for about 10 years? What should you do?

You do not have a job, you do not even remember how it is like to be an office manager, and you stay with kids you need to bring up and give education to. Moreover, you might even not have a credit account of your own, if you had all issues concerned with finances on your husband. This situation can leave you totally frustrated. But you should not give way to despair, you can start afresh, start living a new, full life. And here are some tips for you how to do it.

Even if you have never had your own credit account, this does not mean that you have no credit. In fact, your credit history might have a few surprises for you in store. All of your financial moves, like large loans, mortgage, and regular credit inquires are reflected in your credit report, even if all of those financial operations were initiated by your spouse.

Being an authorized user is just perfect for you. In case you were an authorized user of your husband's or wife's credit card, you will not be responsible for the credit card debts on this plastic. While being a co-signer, in case of a credit card debt occurs, you will have to participate in its elimination. In both cases your credit card use influences your credit history.

If you had no credit account of your own, then your credit future depends entirely on your ex-spouse credit behavior. In case your ex-husband or ex-wife was a diligent and responsible credit card holder, and had a credit score that allowed him or her to qualify for good credit card deals, then you should not worry about your credit report. In this case your credit history is ok, and you will be able to get approved for cash back credit cards, low rate plastics, and other offers with beneficial features and terms.

But anyway, it is high time for you to build your own strong credit history to feel free and independent.

First what you are to do, is find a good job and try to pay off the debts you have on your joint accounts as soon as possible. If you feel that you are not able to do it (in case with a mortgage, for instance) you should contact your credit company and ask them to freeze your account until you come to an agreement with your ex-better half on who owes what.

If your credit history turns out to be much to be desired and you have problems with qualifying for a credit card, apply for a secured credit card. This is a way out and the first step to establishing your good credit history.

You will get a car loan without any serious problems since your loan is secured by the car itself. This minimizes the risk for a creditor.

And do not lose your heart. Your life is not over. It has just begun. Now you can take your new life after divorce under control.
